FAQ
Get Started
I’m a professional. Why do I need UnPromptu?
You know who they are, top artists immortalized for forgetting lyrics to their hit songs. It’s easy to do when you create a lot of work. That’s why musicians have been using teleprompters on stage for decades, reading their songs like a speech.
Our 20-year-young sister program Script-Q has fielded calls for decades from vocalists, assistants and crew members from country, rap, pop and classic rock. Their concern and problems were universally similar; not wanting to look foolish on stage for forgetting them. Everyone needs an aid, some don’t even hide it, but no one has created timed lyrics, not to mention as sophisticated as we have done and that’s because we’ve been listening for years so we could get it right.
Why don’t you have a mobile app, and why is this better than free versions?
We offer monitor sized visuals for the essential reason that your eyes need larger type – especially when you’re active. A phone can only display so much. Most products for monitors use a static page (usually a PDF), advancing lyrics with a controller, or simply squinting. With UnPromptu, you set the pace of the lyrics with the idea that you will perform this in a way that’s unique to you. You might perform faster or slower or both, and your lyrics should be controlled by you. Not the other way around. Users see only the lyrics they need at any given point in time, eliminating the need to scan quickly through a whole page to find the lyrics. Talent can keep their focus on the crowd where it belongs.
I want to setup my tracks and setlist on my personal computer. Can I install UnPromptu on more than one machine?
We understand that things can happen. We allow installation on more than one machine. This license can be used on one machine at a time, so you can work at home, on the bus or during your lunch break. The UnPromptu license lets you install the program on a second machine, any mixture of Macs and/or Windows computers.
I need to sync files with the laptop we use for shows. How do I do that?
You can transfer files with USB drive or Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, Apple iCloud or Google Drive. Set your UnPromptu file folder as a synced folder on your computer and connecting both devices to the sync service. By default, files save to Documents/UnPromptu but that is easily changed in the Preferences.
My demo expired and I haven’t made up my mind. What can I do?
Contact us and we’ll be happy to answer any questions and extend your demo a few more days.
Features
Can you make changes to your gig while the talent is on stage?
Available as a Pro feature only, users can edit in real-time to lyrics, timing, track, setlist order and styling without interruption to the talents screen.
How does UnPromptu know when to show a specific lyric on screen?
UnPromptu stands apart from both karaoke and teleprompting because of its ability to precisely time according to where the user chooses, rather than even timing. By importing an mp3, the user can couple the mp3 to the lyrics. This helps build a timeline by marking start (in points) and end points (endpoints). By playing the mp3, we suggest clicking on the beginning and end of the lyrics as they come up. The time of each click is recorded by UnPromptu and utilized when the track is prompted.
If I change some lyrics or timing in a track, does it overwrite it everywhere?
If you make changes directly to a track, you will be prompted to save it when you close the program. If a track is part of a set, changes made to the track will not change the original track. We designed it that way to tailor tracks to specific events, or tours without worrying about affecting the original. We got ya.
Learning
Can I use this to learn songs?
Retention is everything, and UnPromptu is very kinetic. Because you actively input lyrics, adjust timing, and stylize how the lyrics appear, you become actively engaged. Visual words help imprint for recall. Pro users can add chords and more sophisticated markups, but any user can make notes that will help with learning, similar to leaving notes.
What’s the difference between gigs, setlists and tracks?
A Gig is the UnPromptu program file and can contain single or multiple setlists, individual tracks, and can be saved for future use.
Setlists are managed folders that contain tracks.
Tracks contain the lyrics and can be paired with mp3’s. The tracks lyrics can contain markups and timing settings of the individual songs.
Hardware & Accessories
Can we utilize multiple Slant Screens or Monitor Floor Stands on stage?
Yes, the Slant Screens and Monitor Floor Stands use HDMI connection and the signal can be split with an HDMI splitter.
Do you have bigger slant screens available?
We designed this to be discreet and currently have one size. If you’d like a custom screen, please contact us to have one crafted for you.
Can we use multiple Slant Screens or Monitor Floor Stands on stage?
Yes, the Slant Screens and Monitor Floor Stands use HDMI connection and the signal can be split with an HDMI splitter.
What monitors can we use with the Monitor Floor Stands?
We recommend using a monitor with a 75 or 100 millimeter VESA mount screen up to 24” to work with the stand. The Monitor Floor Stand has been designed to be disassembled and portable. Using a larger screen than our recommendation may result in tipping over. This could injure someone and very likely destroy the monitor. Please check your monitors specs before purchasing.
How can I control the scrolling of my tracks on stage?
We recommend, support and sell Bluetooth products made by AirTurn. UnPromptu has been programmed to connect seamlessly with the foot pedals, bite switch and handheld controllers. Position your monitor, connect your AirTurn accessory and get started right away.

To make the talent window visible again, right-click on the UnPromptu icon in the Dock, then choose Options>Assign To and choose All Desktops from the menu. Your talent/preview window should again be visible on your display.
